2017 Organization of the Year

The Bluenose Curling Club was established in 1853, 3rd oldest club in the province and 16th oldest in Canada. The first indoor facility was opened in 1874 with artificial ice available in 1937 at the North Provost Street location. For 30 years, the Club operated out of a joint facility with the Abercrombie Golf Club in Abercrombie. Presently in its 5th location, a 4-sheet facility on Park Street, New Glasgow, built in 1990

  • As a totally volunteer run club they have a history of community & curling involvement example - fun evening of curling, raising funds for the United Way of Pictou County. Last year the recipient being Autism Pictou County.
  • Partners in Sobeys Slam in 2007, 2008, and 2010.
  • Along with the other clubs in Pictou County, host the long running 55 team Ship Hector CashSpiel.
  • Little Rocks program has more than doubled in the past two years & these young curlers are now in a program that has them progressing in the sport.
  • Members completed Club Coach Clinics in the past two years, and Volunteer Ice Director, Nick Roy, completed his Level 2 Certification this year.
  • Membership numbers been relatively stable, and now in our 3rd year of Bluenose Rocks Novice Program which has added to membership each year.

Some past year specific reasons for naming them Organization of the Year are:

  • Two past presidents as directors on our BOD (Jim Nix & Donalda Buckingham), and  offered their clubhouse for OPs & Finance Committee meetings.
  • Stepped to the plate in hosting more than one NSCA championship event in each of past two years,
  • Hosted first Curling 101 introduced by Curling Canada this past season,
  • Provided Ice Tech assistance from Nick Roy to Highlander CC this past season,
  • President Barb Leck attended Regional meeting last summer and has been on all Club Presidents’ calls and actively shared on the Round Table discussions.
