Arsenault and Murphy are off to Sunday’s finals and while the round robin may be complete, there’s still much left to figure out via tiebreakers. Here’s how Day 5 played out at the 2020 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Deloitte Tankard.
Friday began with Draw 6 of the Scotties. Colleen Jones (Mayflower) outlasted Jill Brothers (Mayflower) in a very close and low scoring battle. The final score was 4-3. Theresa Breen (Halifax), stole two in the fourth and one more in the fifth to pick up her second win of the week. 7-2 was the final in that match.
Mary Mattatall (NSCA) broken open a very close game scoring four in the seventh. They defeated Mary Myketyn-Driscoll (Mayflower) by a score of 8-2. Mary-Anne Arsenault (Mayflower) got out to a commanding 6-0 lead after four ends and went on to easily defeat Tanya Hilliard (Dartmouth), 11-5.
The final draw of the Deloitte Tankard round robin took place later that afternoon. Alan O’Leary (1-6, Dartmouth) scored three in the ninth to end his appearance in the Tankard on a high note. The final was 7-3 over Andrew Gibson (1-6, Lakeshore). Kendal Thompson (5-2, Halifax) secured a spot in Saturday’s semi-final by defeating Chad Stevens (4-3, Truro), 8-4.
Jamie Murphy (6-1, Halifax) rebounded from Thursday’s night loss to secure a spot in Sunday’s finale. They defeated Stuart Thompson (4-3, Dartmouth) by a score of 11-4. Brent MacDougall (3-4, Mayflower) played the role of spoiler in his Tankard finale. They scored a 9-2 victory over Matthew Manuel (4-3, Halifax).
The ladies played to packed house on Friday evening as the Scotties round robin came to an end. Mary Myketyn-Driscoll stole five in the ninth to pick up a 14-5 win over Julie McEvoy (0-7). Mary-Anne Arsenault (6-1) handed Colleen Jones (6-1) her first loss of the week to earn a trip to Sunday’s final.
In a must win game, Brothers (4-3) pulled out a 6-2 victory over Hilliard (4-3). Theresa Breen (3-4) stole the last three points of the game to defeat Mary Mattatall (2-5), 8-5.
In the Deloitte Tankard, Murphy advances to Sunday’s final while a series of tiebreakers will determine who makes in to Saturday night’s semi-final. Stevens will face Manuel in the first tiebreaker at 9:00 AM on Saturday. The win of that tiebreaker will advance to a second tiebreaker later in the day at 2:00 PM. Finally, the winner of the second tiebreaker will advance to the semi-final at 7:00 PM versus K. Thompson. On the Scotties side of things, Brothers and Hilliard will have a rematch at 9:00 AM in a tiebreaker. The winner moves on to face Jones at 7:00 PM.
We hope to see you down at the Dartmouth Curling Club to watch how this will all play out. As always, we will be live streaming the action for those who can’t make it to the club.
