Craig Burgess
Craig is a member of the legendary Burgess curling family, which dates all the way back to Avard Mann in the 1950s and continues to the present with the curling accomplishments of his daughter Karlee.
During his years at CEC, Craig excelled in both curling and track and field.
As a track and field athlete, he was an outstanding sprinter, winning the 200m and 400m events at the NSSAF provincial championships and running on a provincial record-breaking relay team.
In summer track, he represented the province at the National Legion Championships in 1984 and 1985, at the Canada Summer Games in 1985 and at the national junior championships in 1986.
In curling, Craig represented Nova Scotia at the 1985 national junior championship as the lead on the Danny Bentley rink. In 1986, Craig was the CEC Male Athlete of the Year. In 1987, while attending UNB, Craig was a member of the Jim Sullivan foursome that won the gold medal at the national juniors. At these championships, he was selected as the all-star second. In 1988, the Sullivan rink captured the world junior championship in West Germany, where Craig was once again selected as the all-star second.
Craig was chosen as the 1988 Truro Sports Heritage Society Male Athlete of the Year.
In 1990, he represented New Brunswick at the national mixed championship and again as a member of the Jim Sullivan team, won silver at the men’s national championship.
Returning to Nova Scotia after university, Craig continued to curl at the highest level, representing Nova Scotia at the national men’s championship three more times – once as a member of the Bruce Lohnes rink in 1995 and twice as a member of the Shawn Adams foursome – in 2002 and 2005 where he won a second silver medal at the Brier.
A model of consistency, Craig was a finalist at the provincial men’s championship six different times over a span of 20 years.
In 1992, he was inducted into the Fredericton Sports Hall of Fame and in 1994 into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame.
In the Burgess family tradition, Craig has continued to give back to curling and to sport in general as both a coach and volunteer sports administrator in the Colchester County area.
