Nova Scotia teams have won both gold medals at the Canadian Stick Curling Championships, which wrapped up Wednesday afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club.
The duo of Paul Doucet and Dave MacDougal from Nova Scotia defeated the Leslie Hardy and Glen Betts twosome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton by a 6-1 score in the Open (men and mixed) division championship game. The Alberton team are relatively new to the stick curling variant of curling, and were called in to play at the last minute after another team could not make it due to a flight cancellation.
Meanwhile, the team of Uttara Deshpande/Sandra Walker beat the host club duo of Gloria Clarke and Ruth Stavert 7-3 in the women’s final.
The Cornwall team of Etta Reid and Elaine Hughes won the women’s bronze medal game, beating the Patti Simpson/Lynn Doucette duo from Nova Scotia 10-3 in the bronze medal game, while the team of Brian Nickerson and John Cameron from Nova Scotia took the Open division bronze, with a 4-2 win over Cornwall’s Roddie MacLean, teamed up with Haylett Clarke from Nova Scotia.
Next year’s Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship will be at the Highland Curling Club in Regina.
